Students Enlightened on Alcoholism Counseling
GUWAHATI -- The AssamDonBoscoUniversity?s Don Bosco Institute of Social Sciences had a two hour session on Handling Addiction, and Psychology of a Crisis / Trauma, at its Azara campus on 30 August.?The Friday evening sessions were skillfully handled by Prof of Clinical Psychology Dr. Mythili Hazarika from GuwahatiMedicalCollege.?Dr Hazarika?s presentations on counseling for Alcohol Addiction were laced with practical examples from every day family situations of the alcohol abuser.
She explained to about 150 students and faculty members of Social Work and Educational Counseling the process of assessment of addicts through diagnosis, blocks to diagnosis and treatment, assessment of severity of illness and assessment of readiness for change.??Insecure people have a tendency to alcohol addiction as escape mechanism. Also schizophrenic people have tendency to alcoholism, she said.?Answering question ?why don?t people quit alcoholism?? Dr Hazarika said ?Ignorance, personal choice, anger and false sense of entitlement, denial and fear of failure prevent them from seeking help.?
She also said that not only the alcoholic, but also his family members to need counseling.?In the second part of her presentation Dr Hazarika explained the ?Psychology of a Crisis / Trauma? with several practical examples.?The session concluded with question & answer time in which several students interacted with the presenter and clarified their queries.
